How to wash and care for a dog bed

A clean bed lasts longer and keeps your dog and your home fresher. Here is a simple routine.
Step by step
- Check the care label for the maker’s instructions.
- Vacuum the bed to lift hair and dust.
- Remove the cover and wash it at the temperature on the label, with a mild, unscented detergent.
- Skip fabric softener, which can leave residue.
- Dry it completely, ideally in fresh air and sunshine, before putting it back.
- Spot clean the foam with a damp cloth. Do not soak it unless the label says it is safe.

How often?
As a rule of thumb, wash the cover every one to two weeks, and sooner after muddy walks or accidents.
When to replace
Replace the bed when the foam stays flat, the cover tears or the smell remains after washing.
Quick question
Can I wash the foam?
Most foam should not go in the washing machine. Check the care label and spot clean unless the maker says otherwise.

A bed adds comfort and support. It does not treat medical conditions. If your dog seems stiff, limps or sleeps badly, talk to your vet.
